Carl Wilhelm was director of n German Choral Sooiety, (The Liedertafcl of Crefcld) and wrote many male choruses for it, among them this composition. It became the chief national song of Germany during the Franco-Prussian war. Wilhchn was rewarded for it, in 1870, with a gold medal and a pension of 3000 marks. |
